Holiday Baking With Lavender Extract

From holiday traditions to cookie exchanges, it's time to think about holiday baking. Try something different this year by adding some lavender extract. Lavender extract is a versatile flavoring that can be used in place of vanilla in your favorite recipes. It goes with just about anything from chocolate to citrus, buttery recipes to cinnamon spice, By using a bit more extract, lavender can take center stage in your baking, or by using a small amount, it can add depth to the other flavors, adding just a hint of something that people notice but can't name.

Lavender Extract vs. Lavender Simple Syrup

Lavender simple syrup is perfect for use in recipes in which you want to add sweetness, for example, cocktails, mocktails, lattes, iced tea, lemonade, steamed milk, cold foam, etc. In contrast, lavender extract adds flavor without added sugar and can be used in some of your existing recipes simply by replacing all or some of the flavoring. For example: cookies, fudge, cheesecake, pound cake, icing, waffles, French toast casserole, layer cakes, pies, coffee cake, egg nog, whipped cream, creme brulee, and cream filling, just to name a few!

How much lavender extract should you use?

Keep in mind that extract is extremely concentrated, so you want to start with a small amount, do a taste test, then add more if needed. If you're replacing vanilla with lavender extract, use half the amount to start. Remember, less is more when using lavender in recipes. Using too much can overpower the other flavors.

Getting Started

Not sure where to start? Choose a recipe you know and love, either something I've mentioned or something you think lavender will enhance. If you'd rather use one of my recipes, I've shared a few to get you started.
